Summary:

The Canadian Energy Research Institute took a look into different carbon pricing mechanisms. They found that the carbon taxes in B.C. and Alberta did not have the intended effect of reducing emissions. They also noted that prices would have to be much higher to have an impact, but this could lead to carbon leakage, where production shifts to jurisdictions with less environmental regulation.
