The Fraser Institute examines carbon taxes across the country and finds that they are questionable both in impact and implementation, with revenues often being spent on government projects of dubious value:
- Revenues generated from Ontario’s cap-and-trade to be spent on “the usual governmental preferences – transit, subsidies to renewable energy, dubious efficiency programs, etc.”
- Revenues from Alberta’s $30/tonne carbon tax “will be spent on government pet projects”
- Quebec’s cap-and-trade system does not discourage emissions, and revenues are not spent efficiently
- Revenues from BC’s carbon tax are converted to “special interest tax credits and/or narrowly targeted tax reductions”
